| The town of Liberec lies in the hollow between the Jested ridge and the Jizersky mountains. This small settlement, first mentioned in the year 1352, grew by degrees during the 15th and the first half of the 16th century into a subject town, which emperor Rudolf II confirmed in writing in 1577. The beginning of the 19th century saw the development of the textile industry and industrial architecture. This helped the town achieve the status of an independent town. After Prague, Liberec was the biggest town in Bohemia. There were three consulates, 50 textile factories, 60 factories engaged in metal works including the production of RAF cars, among others. | ![]() |

At present Liberec is the metropolis of northern Bohemia with a population of 100 000 people, less than an hour's journey by motorway from Prague. Liberec has a rich cultural life and a tradition. History strikes us above all in the architecture, for example the new renaissance city hall, the theatre or the villas on Masarykova street. The award of the prestigeous Perret prize to the architect Karel Hubacek for his solution for the peak of Jested bears witness to the art of contemporary Liberec architecture. The F. X. Šaldy theatre which boasts three companies (opera, theatre and ballet), was opened in the same year as the national theatre in Prague. The Naivni Theatre which stages the international festival Materinka, brings praise on Liberec from all over Europe with its puppet shows. Other cultural attractions include the North Bohemian museum, several galleries, the zoo, without doubt the oldest in Bohemia, and the modernized botanical gardens. Neither can we forget the unique shopping, gastronomic and entertainment center - Babylon. |
| The most telling title for Liberec is the town of sport. The town has created conditions not only for top sporting competition for example first division football, extraleague volleyball, league ice hockey - but also recreational sport. Where else can you travel by tram to the foot of a thousand meter mountain (Jested 1012 m), which is suitable for walking, cycling and downhill skiing. Fans of cross country skiing enthusiasts prefer the Jizersky mountains opposite. The Jizersky Magistrale is a collection of thought out, connected and maintained tracks varying in length and difficulty. The Jizersky mountains are lesser known for their climbing terrain, nevertheless climbing on the granite "Bell" is one of the most sought after ascents. Many enthusiastic cyclists, brought together by the system of cycle routes and paths welcome the characteristic hilly terrain. The system is continually extended and improved. | ![]() |
| In Liberec you can play tennis, basketball, volleyball, foot tennis, squash and ricochet, go bowling, swimming or diving in the fifty meter pool with its toboggan run, go horse riding, or, for the bravest of visitors parachuting and paragliding are both available. Nor should we forget the cosy pubs of various styles and offering various cuisines, some of which, in summer, offer the possibility sitting under trees in the garden. |
Registration of participants is free.
